On Friday, November 22, 2019, students in German 390 at UNCA presented BERLIN: Ein Gruselkabinett, an original German-language theatrical work. The performance took place in the Highsmith Student Union “Grotto” on the UNCA campus and featured Hunter Grigg, Pierce Hall, Jennifer Hanolt, Elena Keller, Jarrod Lanier, Abi Snow and Seth Whitaker. The show, directed by Dr. John Crutchfield and produced by the UNCA Department of Languages and Literatures, offered a collage of student writing, as well as music and dance, relating to the city of Berlin – in history, politics, culture, and the imagination. The show exemplified the aesthetic/performative approach to foreign language teaching and learning that has the hallmark of Dr. Crutchfield’s work since his time as a researcher in English Didactics at the Freie Universität Berlin.
