ROBERT RETURNS, the long-awaited (actually totally unexpected) sequel to The Songs of Robert, the verse play with music that launched The Magnetic Theater in 2008, won a Judges’ Award for Best Solo Performance at the 2009 New York International Fringe Festival, and inaugurated the artistic collaboration between John Crutchfield and Steven Samuels that continues today as The Sublime Theater & Press.

After a two-year hiatus due to the Covid pandemic, The Sublime Theater re-emerges this September with the world premier of Robert Returns. Like its predecessor, the show is a verse play with original music, performed by a single actor embodying multiple characters. This time, however, “Robert” is no longer a teenager on the brink of setting out into the world, but a grown man returning to his hometown in Southern Appalachia after a crisis of faith in himself and his dreams. What he discovers there will change not only who he is but his entire understanding of the community he grew up in.

Directed by Steven Samuels and starring John Crutchfield, with design, technical assistance, and stage management by Olivia Stuller.

Premiers Thursday, September 15, and runs Thursdays through Saturdays through October 1, 2022. All performances at 7:30pm at the BeBe Theatre on 20 Commerce Street in downtown Asheville, NC.

The performance runs approximately one hour and fifteen minutes without intermission. Please note that seating is limited due to public health guidelines, and that audiences are required to wear masks.

All seats $15 in advance, $20 cash only at the door. For more information, and to reserve tickets, click here.
